Roy M. Paul

Roy M. Paul began karate in 1973, studying Chito Ryu, in Belleville, Ontario under Sensei Kenzo Dozono. Roy has been involved in Shorin-ryu karate since 1987 and has been a student of Iha Sensei since 1992. In 1998 he was appointed Canadian Director by Senseis Miyahira and Iha. On March 12, 2011, he was promoted to 6th Dan by Iha Sensei and awarded a Shihan title and on March 25, 2017 was promoted to 7th Dan and awarded a Kyoshi title. Roy has had the honour to travel with Iha Sensei around the world and has competed in world tournaments in Okinawa and the Bahamas. He has also had opportunity to train with Katsuya Miyahira, 10th Dan, Shorin-ryu Shido-kan: Shugoro Nakazato, 10th Dan, Shorin-ryu Shorin Kan: Shoei Miyazato 10th Dan, Shorin-ryu Miyazato Dojo and Kensei Taba, 10th Dan, Shogen Ryu.

Margaret Paul

Margaret Paul has been involved in Shorin-ryu Shido-kan karate since 1993, after trying karate as a way to get in shape for baseball, during the winter months. She was promoted by Iha Sensei to 6th degree black belt and awarded a Shihan title on July 17th 2014. Margaret has also travelled with Iha Sensei and has competed in world tournaments in Okinawa, the Bahamas and South America. Sensei Margaret finds karate a great way to deal with the daily stresses of working as an self employed software developer.

Linda Frey

Linda Frey

Linda began training in Shorin Ryu Shido-kan in 1999 under Senseis Roy and Margaret Paul. She became a karate student after several years of watching her son and then her daughter practice Shido-kan and reach Shodan level. Her original goals when starting karate at the age of 47, were to have a little exercise and flexibility training, learn some self-defence, have a family activity and achieve 1 or 2 coloured belts.  In 2013, Linda was promoted to 4th degree black belt by Iha Sensei. She has had the honour of training at the dojo of Shoei Miyazato, Sensei, 10th Dan, in Argentina, during his 50th Anniversary celebration, in 2009 and with Kensei Taba, Sensei, 10th Dan Shogen Ryu. Linda is a retired teacher, who spent much of her teaching career working with special needs students and as a primary reading specialist. She has found that studying Shido-kan Karate has been a focus for mind, body and spirit, a confidence booster, an opportunity to build friendships and a place to have fun.

Denan Sarac

Denan Sarac

Denan Sarac started training in Shotokan in 1996, while living in Croatia; reaching 3rd kyu before moving to Canada. He began training with Senseis Roy and Margaret in 2000 and was promoted to 4th Dan, by Iha Sensei on March 21, 2015. Denan also trains in MMA and teaches applications integrating kata with practical fighting techniques.

Don Smeltzer

Don Smeltzer

Don began his martial arts training in 1985, studying Tae Kwon Do for 5 years in Toronto with Jong Park Tae Kwon Do. His work took him to Guelph in 1990 and he began training in Shorin Ryu Shido-kan in 2001. Don was promoted to 4th Dan by Iha Sensei on November 19, 2016. He has also had opportunity to train with Kensei Taba, Sensei, 10th Dan Shogen Ryu. His Karate is a family affair as his wife, Pat also trains with him.

 

 

Luis Gomes

Luis Gomes

Luis started Karate in December 2006. It was a life long dream to get into martial arts but he had never found or made the time. Luis decided to seriously allocate some time to this art form at the age of 37 and has enjoyed it ever since. He has found that through practicing Shido-Kan he has made so many new positive friendships, increased his physical capabilities and just keeps learning and learning.  Through training in Shido-Kan karate,he has met so many people with skill sets far above what he had experienced elsewhere. All of these people have become friends, they're confident, positive and are always willing to help/teach Shido-Kan karate. Luis was promoted by Iha Sensei to Nidan, 2nd degree black belt on March 21, 2015. His goal is that as he keeps learning and advancing he will be able to help others learn and enjoy this art.
